Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth honors African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. This year, we are excited to host Chef Tanya Holland—acclaimed chef, restaurateur, and expert on soul food—for a Juneteenth celebration on Sunday, June 16 at CIA at Copia. The menu is inspired by the southern BBQ classic, meat and three, with beverages included (two drink tickets with each ticket). We look forward to seeing you for an evening of food, drink, and celebration of Black culture in the Copia Gardens. We welcome you all and your families to join us!

From Chef Tanya Holland: “It’s amazing to me that I was born almost exactly 100 years after Juneteenth was established in Texas in 1865 to celebrate the emancipation of slaves and that it only became a national holiday in 2021. Most of my maternal family migrated to California from Northwest Louisiana, very close to East Texas and everyone loved to celebrate this monumental day.”

“The practice of eating red foods—red cake, barbecue, red punch, and fruit—may owe its existence to the enslaved Yoruba and Kongo brought to Texas in the 19th century. For both of these cultures the color red is the embodiment of spiritual power and transformation.”
